Remember when you first heard “Somebody that I used to Know” by Gotye? I heared that song about 4 months before it made it on top 40 radio stations. Never thought that style of music would ever become mainstream. I’m happy it did, but at the same time I wish it didn’t because it gets so overplayed. For those of you that haven’t listened to the rest of Gotye’s album, definitely make some time for it.
This post isn’t about Gotye though, it’s about another artist from New Zealand who goes by the name of Lorde (pronounced Lord), she’s only 16 by the way. I put such an emphasis on Gotye because the style is so similar. Kimbra, who is the artist that is featured in “Somebody that I used to Know,” has an even more identical style than Gotye. The “New Zealand genre” is sneaking their way into mainstream music like many other folk artists such as the Lumineers and Mumford & Sons. If you don’t know what I mean by “New Zealand genre” then listen to this song and you’ll understand. Lorde will be starting a U.S. tour this month, it’s the first time she’s been out of her home country. You’ll be seeing me at one of her New England shows.
