If you’ve known me for a while, you’ll know that I’m a huge Deadmau5 fan. You’ll also know that if you pronounce it Deadmaufive, my eyes will open wide with fury. I try to keep up with as much of Joel Zimmerman’s work as much as possible but I’m always surprised when I look at how much of his music is on Spotify, some of which I’ve never heard before. Deadmau5 is my favorite electronic artist because he’s honest and isn’t trying to sell himself as the poster child for North American EDM. He recently wrote a blog entitled “we all hit play” in which he rallies against the notion that live EDM shows are actually, well, “live.” That doesn’t bother me, I’m at those shows for the production that goes into them.
Speaking of production, one of my favorite Deadmau5 videos is of the release concert for the Nokia Lumia 800. I’m not trying to sell the phone, and you’ll know why after watching this…
Deadmau5 also just released The Veldt EP. There’s quite a story behind this track. He created and uploaded the core instrumental to SoundCloud and then lobbied fans on Twitter about a vocal version that Chris James, a fan, had posted. Zimmerman often runs live streams and I saw some of the making of this track. Anyway, check it out.
