The second annual Boston Calling Music Festival will be held this Memorial Day weekend at City Hall Plaza in downtown Boston, MA and I could not be more excited to attend. While Boston Calling Music Festival has only been around for a few short years, their line up of performers this time around is quiet impressive and should have any Alternative/Indie music fan screaming and jumping in anticipation (or maybe that was just me). Headlining the festival this year are Jack Johnson, Death Cab for Cutie, and Modest Mouse. If those three bands playing together do not immediately ignite a spark in you to buy a ticket, allow me to tell you why you do not want to miss this year’s Boston Calling, which kicks off tomorrow.

First off, let’s check out the rest of the line up for these three incredible days of music (and hopefully sunshine). Friday night features a mellow jam session with Hawaiian native Jack Johnson, along with Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and Cass Mccombs. Saturday’s line up includes: Death Cab For Cutie, The Decemberists, The Head and the Heart, Frank Turner, Jenny Lewis, The Neighborhood, Warpaint, Walk Off the Earth, Maximo Park and Magic Man. To top it off, the Sunday line up includes: Modest Mouse, Tegan & Sara, Phosphorescent, Built to Spill, Brand New, Bastille, Kurt Vile and the Violators, The Districts, and Tigerman WHOA!.

Breathe.

Pick up the phone, call your aunt and apologize that you can’t make it to the annual BBQ on the lake because you will be attending one of the most epic musical festivals to hit the East Coast (does the phrase:“sorry, not sorry” apply here?).

Fear not, while attending Boston Calling you won’t be subjected to watered down coleslaw, questionable hotdog meat, and your family’s watchful eye as you reach for a second beer. Instead, if you decide to grab a bite at the festival, you will have a wide range of delicious options such as: Chipotle Mexican Grill, Tasty Burger, Roxy’s, Bon Me, The Chicken and Rice Guys, Flatbread Pizza and much more. Sam Adams will be featured in all beer vending areas.

WOOF. Let’s put down the imaginary Tasty Burger and let’s get back to focusing on this killer line up Here are the artists I am most excited to see: Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls, Brand New, Bastille, Modest Mouse, The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, and Tegan and Sara.

If you have never heard of Frank Turner, then let me suggest immediately stopping whatever you may be doing and downloading the song “Four Simple Words” it will immediately have you smiling, dancing, and in a generally better mood than when you first initially hit play. Turner is a singer-songwriter from England whose songs are so damn relatable they will have you singing along with him at the top of your lungs. Because Turner made a name for himself playing in small bars, he knows how to engage, enlighten, and entertain any audience. I could go on for paragraphs as to why he is one of my favorite artists of all time and one of the most honest musicians I know, meaning he is in this business not for the glory or fame, but because he genuinely loves making music and everything that goes along with it. His last album “Tape Deck Heart” was released in early 2013 and is a blend of punk and folk music that will have you dancing, cursing out your ex lovers, all while having a few drinks at a local pub with your friends. (Frank suggests a round of Jameson)

Brand New has been one of my favorite bands ever since my high school days. Their albums, as well as their over all sound, has changed as they have grown both together as a band and in age from the earlier, angrier, and edgier punk-rock album “Your Favorite Weapon” to their latest more dramatic, heartfelt, and dare I say, indie, album “Daisy”. This is a band I could see hundreds of times and still enjoy every minute of every show. It is not only the band’s energy you will feel but also the strong attachment, dedication, and love of the crowd to Brand New that has me (and hopefully you) excited to see them, time and time again.

A year ago, I would not have known who Bastille was, but now this indie UK band has gone from selling out small shows to performing in large arenas and festivals around the world. Their 2013 album “Bad Blood” has several hits such as “Pompeii” which will be the perfect sing along for those who attend.

The Decemberists are a part of a folk rock genera that has become increasingly popular over the years with similar bands such as Mumford and Son’s, The Lumineer’s, and The Lone Bellow – all of which have a strong following. Boston Calling will be the band’s first live performance since 2011 and should be one to remember.

If you are still reading this I am assuming you are either looking for the part where I say BUY TICKETS HERE or DIRECTIONS TO TASTY BURGER HERE.
